1973 National Greentown Glass Association Was Born

National Greentown Glass Association

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a growing number of Greentown glass collectors began running into each other at antique shows and auctions time and time again. At about the same time, civic leaders in Greentown were realizing the potential of the historical significance of the glass. They founded a museum featuring the glass and organized an annual festival. With all of these ingredients in place, it was inevitable for an organization to germinate.

In the summer of 1973, a group of individuals met at the Kokomo Public Library under the guidance of Ray and Mamie Dufford. Over an intense three-day period, they formulated a constitution and by-laws for the new organization. Those founding members were, in addition to the Duffords, as follows: James Hill, George and Donna Huffman, Wallace Spencer Huffman, Phillip Knotts, James Measell, and Gene Pickett.

The resulting document defined a purpose for the organiza tion, provided a method of leadership selec tion, outlined the office requirements, and enacted a policy on reproductions and ethics. These documents also required incorporation under the laws of the state of Indiana as a not- for-profit corporation.

In late 1973, the constitution and by-laws were approved by the membership, and, in January 1974, the first newsletter of the new organization, the National Greentown Glass Association, was distributed to the member ship.

Over the years, the NGGA has taken on a variety of special projects, including the printing of various publications, the restoration of preservation of various glass artifacts, ongoing research, and the continual search for new information on the mysteries of Greentown Glass.

The NGGA assembles the second weekend in June in Greentown for its annual meeting. Members from all over North America meet to renew friendships and learn a bit more about their glass. This annual meeting has taken place since 1973. In addition to the annual business meeting where new officers are elected, glass is bought, sold, traded, and exhibited for all to see. The weekend culminates with an evening dinner and program.
